There’s no need for me to be a film buff to know that Halloween movies are creepy affairs.
I pride myself on being a tough nut (MI6 training makes one harder than the average primate), but extreme bravery will be what you need my compadres, should you try your hand at Microgaming’s terror-fest Halloween slot – based on the movie of the same name. This game is from those same people behind games like Jungle Jim and the Lost Sphinx and Thunderstruck. They’ve dialed up the frighteners on this one though.
If a fright night is your cup of Earl Grey, then you might already have seen the famed 1978 slasher flick. If not, the plot is as follows: On the evening of October 31st a masked lunatic unleashes murder on a small town’s unsuspecting population. What follows is a fantastically gory 120 minutes of jump out-of-your-seat action. Are you prepared for some spine-tingling spins?
Cinematic scares aside, this game offers you Jumbo Symbols, Wandering Reels, and a Trick or Treat Bonus Wheel feature. This wheel will deliver you a plethora of cash prizes and free spins – or if you’re very unlucky – a hair-raising encounter with Michael Myers the boogeyman of the movie. EEEK!
As one would expect, the game design is heavily influenced by Halloween the movie and includes clips and images from the original. Oh yes, and it features the nerve-jangling soundtrack, too!
The reels are set against the veranda of a wooden house. Instead of sunshine, a storm is blowing up in the background of your game.
Probably the most bloodcurdling aspect is when Michael randomly lurks to the left of the reels by the washing line…
Microgaming have done a very good job of creating a truly atmospheric horror slot.
Prepare to be terrified over 5 reels with expanding rows and a scarily-good 50 pay-lines. That´s quite a handful, even from a slots provider with plenty of games like Lara Croft Temples and Tombs which has 243 Ways to Win. ALthough they do do a 6 row game with 4096 Ways to Win called the Arctic Valor slot – that´s also worth a go.
Anyway, back to October 31st. Laurie (the lead played by Jamie Lee Curtis), is the most valuable icon in the game paying out 10x your bet for 5 on a pay-line. She’s followed by doctor Loomis (who is intent on capturing the escaped lunatic). Next up are a pair of likely victims, Annie and Linda.
And so, the stage is set for slot mayhem.
The mid to low value icons are the movie’s murder weapons including a gun, a knife, a clown’s mask, an old-fashioned phone, a book, and a set of knitting needles.
The chilling Wild is the game logo; a massive knife made to look like a Halloween pumpkin. Meanwhile the Bonus icons are made up of red and yellow balls with the word “Bonus” on them – thus completing the suspenseful set.
Watch out for the Wandering Reels in this game. This is a great little feature that sees a section of the expand and reels move around to try and generate more winning combinations for you.
Trick or Treat Bonus Wheel
Land 3x or more of the Bonus icons and you will trigger off the eerie Trick or Treat Bonus Wheel.
You will be taken to a new screen where you’ll see Laurie cowering to the right and the shadow of a murderous Michael against the wall. Less frightening (thank the Lord) is the massive icon-covered wheel that generates your next move.
Spin the wheel to discover if you will win a multiplier up to x10 your wager, or land one of the character icons to trigger off the free spins game.
Well I’ll be jiggered, it’s 9x free spins for us now, and the triggering icon lands in ludicrously large 3×4 sized icons to help you make up more wins! How delightful!
If you land Michael on the Bonus Wheel, you will enter the Boogeyman Bonus.
You’ll find yourself looking down a flight of stairs at a partly open door, to the right of the scene are a series of fallen leaves. Pick between leaves to reveal cash prizes, or the mask which buys you an extra life.
If you accidentally reveal the knife, the feature ends. Rather unpleasantly you’ll also see a silhouette of the approaching killer!
The Monkey Verdict
Microgaming’s Halloween slot has been designed to scare and thrill in equal measure my dear chums.
If you’re a fan of the Halloween films franchise, then you will absolutely love the attention to detail – plus the bonus games are generous and easy to trigger.
4.5 out of 5 bananas
A spine-tingling Halloween chiller.
