Golden Grimoire

So, my inquisitive chums, what exactly is a grimoire?

Well, a grimoire is a magical spell book, but the word itself is actually derived from the French. Isn’t it lucky that I’m neither fazed by languages or etymology? It’s so tiresome being a polymath…

Anyway, enough about me, let’s enter the realm of enchantment, and see if we can’t conjure up some magical cash.

The Basics

Golden Grimoire slot features a rather neat bonus where a mystery icon can transform the symbols on the reels into extra Wilds. It’s also slightly on the dark side – so get ready to be spooked.

The Graphics

NetEnt have invested in the look and feel of Golden Grimoire slot – and it’s paid off. It reminds me a bit of the styling behind the Wish Upon a Jackpot slot, although that one has an overweight fairy in it.

Behind the transparent reels, the game play takes place in a mysterious moonlit room just perfect for making magic. A huge glass round window is centre stage and there’s a plethora of lit candles swaying in front of the reels. The stone walls are engraved with mystical symbols that illuminate, and from time to time spell books levitate, too. Rousing stuff!

You can also expect orchestral style soaring music to accompany your spins -that sound not entirely unlike the film score to Harry Potter… Could this merely be coincidence? We’re not sure..

The Play

This spell-binding slot is played out over 4 rows, 5 reels and 20 pay-lines. That´s not as many as the likes of the Crusader slot machine from ELK (6 more), but we´d say it´s about average, the same as Agent Destiny from Play ´N Go for example.

Your symbols on the reels are made up of huge gems encased in a selection of creatures; an Egyptian Scarab beetle- the sign of eternal life is wrapped around a purple amethyst, a sapphire held by a serpent, an emerald grasped in the arms of a giant squid, and a ruby surrounded by a huge spider – it’s all rather unnerving even for a tough nut like me.

The lower value icons are made up of the four suits of the card deck in the coordinating colour of the gems and they gently glow on the reels. It´s a colourful old game, not as bright as the Slots O´Gold slot, but then again that´s got a rainbow in it.

Golden Grimoire slot’s Wild is a golden skull, but this useful icon only transfigures onto the reels when it is revealed by the Mystery Symbol. This Wild substitutes for all icons except the Scatter – the Scatter being an otherworldly keyhole with the word “Scatter” inscribed across it.

Keep your eyes open for the game’s Mystery Symbol – a grimoire with a question mark on its cover – it’s where the wins are.

The Bonuses

If you’re lucky enough to land the Mystery Symbols on reels 3, 4 or 5 in the base game, you’ll these icons will become bewitched and transform into either a random icon or Wild to help you land extra winning combos. If this new icon matches any symbols on the first reel, they will join up and link to make some nice wins.

Trigger the Free Spins bonus by hitting the Scatter symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5. You’ve now got now 8 free spins for the taking! During the bonus, you can see how many spins you have left by checking out the floating spell book to the left of the reels.

But hang on! There’s more! The Mystery Symbols are also in play during the bonus feature. And they’ll be hitting the reels more often, too. When this lucrative symbol lands it will now become sticky until the mode ends – creating the possibility for some decent wins.

The Monkey Verdict

Golden Grimoire slot looks the business, and I am really rather fond of the Mystery Symbols feature. But, if you’re looking for those really big wins, you won’t find them in the base game. Instead, keep your fingers crossed for the Free Spins – it’s where you might boost that bankroll. Cheerio! And good luck gamers.

3.5 out of 5 bananas.
