Finn and the Swirly Spin™

Finn and the Swirly Spin™

Finn and the Swirly Spin slot is NetEnt’s hugely popular Irish themed slot, and a big favourite here at Monkey Casino.

We are big fans of Finn’s Golden Tavern slot too. And let’s not forget the Superstars slot, featuring Finn with other favourite NetEnt characters such as Gonzo, Lady Pig and a Starburst Wild.

The Basics

Apart from coming up with a head-spinning spiral mechanic, this game boasts six different bonus games to unlock Finn’s Leprechaun hoard of gold!

The game is laid out on a a 5×5 spiral. You need to match three symbols horizontally or vertically to trigger a win: it’s quite an innovative mechanic! The game has a low to medium volatility and features include Free Spins, a Random Bonus, Sticky Wilds, and standard Wilds.

Finn and the Swirly Spin launched in November 2017.

The Graphics

This game has great graphics with big screen flourishes and fantastic details. NetEnt have thrown the kitchen sink at the design budget resulting in glossy good looks and first-rate animation. It even tops games like the Koi Princess slot, also by the same designers – and that’s saying something.

The setting is a lush green landscape of rolling hills, trees and rainbows. Well it is Ireland! And even better, the sun is out! Grab some rays while you can.

To the left of the spiral-shaped reel is Finn, the pipe playing Leprechaun. To the right of the reels is a tree with spiral shaped leaves gently blowing in the breeze.

The grey monolith rock structure in the centre of the screen is the ‘Swirly Spin’ featuring the reels.  A rather cheeky looking chap called Finn provides the piped background music of the game, an Irish folk soundtrack that moves the play along nicely.

Finn and the Swirly Spin™ Slot Game Play

Prepare to leave all your slot preconceptions at the door- as this is no standard format of reels falling vertically downwards like the Butterfly Staxx slot or Starburst (both good NetEnt slots).

The game’s title – ‘Swirly Spin’ – holds the clue. You are going to be spinning in more ways than one!

This slot’s reels spin in the shape of a spiral. I did warn you that this game is something of a departure from the norm, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

As the reels “spin” any wins generated disappear, allowing new icons to cascade into their place, a sure fire way for another shot at the pot of gold on offer. And if you’re lucky when the new symbols fall into place there may be a Wild added into the mix (except where the Wild is part of the initial winning combination). Finn will doff his cap and give you signs of encouragement as he plays his flute to the side.

The icons keeps cascading  until you stop generating new wins. This is classic NetEnt – similar to the feature that we first saw in the Gonzo’s Quest slot, the game that started it all. It’s called the Avalanche Feature on that game, but in Finn and the Swirly Spin slot the symbols move along the spiral to the middle of the game.

It’s the same theory though, and you can get some nice additional wins on this mechanic if you are lucky.

The Icons

In this game, wins are generated by matching 3 icons in a vertical or horizontal row on the reel set and each win awards you with a star.  The dazzling ruby gemstone is the highest value icon: land five in a row to win 500 coins. After that the next most lucrative icons are a golden acorn, a horseshoe, and a four leaf clover.

A rustic wooden heart and spade are the lower value icons.

The Wild icon is a gold star with a pair of blue eyes. Well, normal rules don’t apply in this crazy land. This Wild star has some rather explosive qualities.

When the win makes up part of a winning line it explodes, destroying other icons that are adjacent to it, both horizontally and vertically.

There’s a special gold coin Sticky Wild icon that occurs only in the Lava Lair Free Spins feature. This Wild won’t explode or destroy neighbouring icons during a win. And that’s a good thing as it’s easier to make up winning combos with a few Wilds about.

The Bonuses

At random after any win you may be lucky enough to enter one of four side games.

Starfall Wilds

Starfall Wilds gives you a pair of stellar Wilds on the reels: these can land anywhere except on the Free Spins key icon. If you don’t manage to land a win, a new star will be added to your reel set until you do.

Dragon Destroy

Dragon Destroy is a gift to those who have failed to secure a win. The dragon will destroy a number of icons which creates a cascade and could help bag a win for you.

The Irish Luck

The Irish Luck game kicks into action only after the first spin you fail to make a win. A winning line of any icon, except the Wild, is added either vertically or horizontally to make you a winner.

Magic Transform

Magic Transform changes the lower value heart and spade icons transforming them into new icons- these are not the same for both icons.

Free Spins

finn and the swirly spin free spins scatterThe sharp-eyed among you will notice that on the bottom left of the reel set is a sparkling key in a crystal cup. As you play and generate wins this icon will travel around the reels towards the centre where there is a keyhole.

When the key arrives there, it triggers the Free Spins game.

There are four different Free Spins games. Three of the four side games need multiplier triggers of the Free Spins game to gain special access to VIP routes to potential wins.

The Star Bar

Take your chances on The Star Bar and get cracking with seven Free Spins. Two Wilds are added to the reels to try to make you a line win. New stars are added until you secure a win. Does that remind you of Starfall Wilds?

The Lava Lair

The Lava Lair takes four keys to unlock. This feature gives you three free games with the Dragon Destroy function in place – that is the destruction of icons to provide possible new winning combinations.

Remember that there’s a Sticky Wild at play in this side game to boost your booty.

With nine keys you can get your hands on four free games in the Lucky Mugs feature where failure to make a win triggers the Irish Luck feature.

The Golden Pot

The Golden Pot (where Finn the Leprechaun has stashed his treasure) takes sixteen keys to access. Land two Free Spins with the Magic Transform morphing magic in place and see those hearts and spades become valuable.

Monkey Verdict

Finn and the Swirly Spin slot is a game changer in the busy world of Irish themed games and there aren’t many slot games with so many extras!

With four Free Spins games and those randomly triggered side games there’s plenty of Leprechaun’s luck to go after.

finn and the swirly spin horseshoe symbolStunning and highly entertaining fare. Our Swedish friends NetEnt have pulled out all of the stops on this one.

Top work boys and girls, I should think it was extra meatballs all round when you submitted this one to the Top Brass at NetEnt HQ, most impressive my Nordic friends.

“Bra gjort!” as they say in Sweden.
